National Education Day - 2014

11th November, 2014 marks the birth anniversary of Mulana Azad. He is the man who was the great freedom fighter and educationist. He was the outstanding scholar of Oriental Learning and worked diligently in shaping the educational policies.

After independence in 1947, Maulana Azad became the first union cabinet minister of Education. He established a national education system with free primary education and modern institutions of higher education.

In 2007, Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad initiated the move to celebrate Maulana Azad’s Birthday as the Education Day to give due respect to Maulana Azad. Later, in 2008, Government of India, has chosen this day to celebrate it as the National Education Day.

Unfortunately, even after 67 years of independence, Education system in our country is really in bad shape. There are still many educational institutions where there is neither a playground, nor a toilet. The government had planned to have the survey that will go through check of the infrastuctural and educational system prevailing in government schools, government aided schools and colleges all over India.

Many government teachers still feel ashamed of their jobs and many have taken teaching job for just time pass, they are good for nothing. Thus, recruiting teachers  does not solve the problem. Next important plan of action of the government is to impart trainings to the teachers to improve their teaching methodology and they feel proud of their profession.

The government has started one year national level program, “Mentor your future generation, villages needs you”.  Such programs would be offered to corporate people, people who are passionate about teaching and are looking for a change, a break from the monotonicity of life. For them, money is not that big issue. They need a change, recognition and feel better that have done something worthwhile  for their nation.

The government's aim is shifting the mindset of students from rote learning to understanding what they are studying.

The Government wants the best out of the students. This can be possible by explaining them in a natural way by giving live examples, in such a way they can relate easily. Next teachers need to involve more with students rather than just completing the syllabus with one eye on the clock and another on an attendance - sheet. Teachers need to develop a model where learning can be fun rather than a monotonous activity.

Students should not be forced to write tortuous exams and be asked to compete with each other in a class of 60-90 students thrice a year, or, in fact, round the year.

The government wants to make studies, interactive by providing an online book archive that will provide books from all over India.

One of the important changes in the Educational system is the Educational App that will provide the online platform for the easy communication among teachers, parents and students. According to this app parents can have the information about the attendance, assignments, homework, syllabus and schedule of upcoming exams. Apart from these information parents and students will receive the important announcements such as closing of school in lieu of certain emergency.

Ministry of Human and Resource Development and Ministry of Education along with various state governments in the country celebrate National Education Day. Government tries to involve various education institutions in holding essay writing competitions, debates, song and drawing competitions, seminars to spread awareness about the right way of Education. The government will put forward their plan of action tomorrow in front of public. Let’s see how successful they will be.

We all must understand that the Government cannot achieve anything unless and until the citizens of India recognize their role and try to teach at least one poor student or least made him or her aware the importance of education.
