A festival to celebrate birthday of God Ganesha

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated by Hindus all over India, as the birthday of the god of wisdom, knowledge, and prosperity, Lord Ganesha.

It is celebrated in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The date usually falls between 19 August and 20 September. The festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing phase of the moon).

Celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi:

People begin preparing months before the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi by selecting Ganesha’s idols. They clean and decorate their home for welcoming their beloved God Ganesha.
On this occasion, some people keep fast and then in evening they break their fast and have various delicacies in the evening.

On Ganesh Chaturthi Devotees follow the ritual of bringing home the Ganesha Idol, many of them choose to perform the Ganesh Staphna (Installation of the Idol) by themselves, and others call Hindu priest for that. They pray God Ganesha in the morning and evening with full devotion and offer sweets especially his favorite modaks (sweet made from a mixture of flour, sugar, and which is shaped into a ball), fruits especially his favorite bananas, coconut, flowers, and Druva (grass) is the main part of the prayer. After 10 days, there are small to large possessions carrying idols of Ganesha for performing the Ganesh Visarjan (Immersion of Ganesha idol in the river). Devotees believe that Ganesha takes a journey from there towards his abode, taking along their troubles with him.

On that day, there is giant size pavilions were erected for final prayers before bidding Goodbye to their God Ganesha.
