He was born in a Telugu Niyogi Brahmin caste family at a village near Thiruttani India, in Tamil Nadu near the border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states. His father's name was Sarvepalli Veeraswami, and his mother's name was Sitamma. He was conferred with scholarships throughout his academic life. He was a prominent student of Voorhees College in Vellore from where he had completed his Post Graduation in Philosophy. S. Radhakrishnan respect teachers a lot and thus when he became President, some of his students and friends requested him to allow them to observe his birthday, 5th September. He replied that Instead of celebrating his birthday, it would be his proud privilege if 5th September would be observed as Teacher’s Day. Since then, his birthday has been commiserated as Teacher’s Day in India.

This is often followed by a range of colorful cultural programs, feast, and other activities which make the event special and unforgettable.
