Chanakya – Chapter Three

1. In this world, is there any family who is without any blame? Is there anyone who is without any sickness and grief? Is there anyone who remain happy always?

2. A man's background may recognize by his conduct, his country by the way he speaks his language, his friendship by his affection and glow, and his ability to eat by his body.

3. Marry your daughter in a good family, encourage your son in learning, take care of your enemy when in grief, and connect your friends towards divinity.

4. Of a scoundrel and a snake, the snake is the better of the two, for he only strike at the time he decide to kill, while the former at every step.

5. Kings must gather with counsellors of good families, as they never leave them either at the start, the middle or the end.

6. At the time of the universal destruction, the oceans exceed their limits and seek to change, but a holy man never changes.

7. If one keeps company with a fool, he can realize that he is with a two-legged beast. He pierces the heart with his sharp words that can be compared as unseen thorn.

8. No matter man is born in a noble family and has youth and beauty, yet without education, he is like the palas flower, which does not have a sweet scent.

9. The attraction of a cuckoo is her notes, that of a woman in her undiluted loyalty to her husband, that of an unattractive person in his scholarship, and that of an austere in his forgiveness.

10. Sacrifice a member to save your family, a family to save your village, a village to save your country, and the country to save yourself.

11. There is no poverty for the hard-working. Sin does not append to the person who chant the holy names of the Almighty. Those who are absorbed in meditation have no quarrel with others. Who always remain alert are fearless.

12.-13.
There is no article heavy for the strong and no place is distant for those who lay effort. There is no country remain foreign to a man who believe in true learning. No one can oppose who speaks pleasingly.

14. A family becomes famous by the birth of a virtuous son, as a whole forest becomes fragrant by the existence of a single tree with sweet-smelling blossoms in it.
