CHANAKYA NITISHASTRA – CHAPTER THIRTEEN

1) A person may live for a moment but he or she should spent that moment in doing some auspicious deeds. Otherwise it is useless if one live for 43 billion years and bringing only distress.

2) One should have grudges for what is past, nor should we be anxious about the future; one should only deal with the present moment.

3) It is the nature of the people of good character, demigods and parents can be easily pleased. Kith & Kin are pleased when they receive hospitably along with food drink, and bathing; Spiritual teacher is pleased with an opportunity for giving spiritual discourse.

4) The five things are predicated for the unborn baby in the womb of his mother are as follows: life destiny, life span, major events of life, acquisition of wealth &knowledge, and the time of death.

5) It is surprising as the doings of the great people are strange, they treat wealth as light as a straw and when they obtain it, they bend under its weight.

6) The person who is desperately attached to his or her family members will experience sorrow and fear. This attachment can lead to the grief. It is advisable that to remain happy, one need not attach to worldly people and desires.

7) The person who cleverly prepared for the future can easily dealwith any situation remain happy; but the person who is sitting idle wholly depends on luck is ruined.

8) If the king is righteous, then the subjects are also righteous. If the king is wicked, then the subjects also become wicked. If he is average, then the subjects are also average. The subjects follow the example of the king. In short, as is the king so are the subjects.

9) According to the Chanakya the person who does not act religiously is considered as dead though living, but the person who dies acting religiously indisputably lives long in the mind of the fellow beings though the person is dead.

10) The person who has not assimilated moral values, wealth, worldly desires nor salvation lives aruthless life, like the nipples hanging from the neck of a goat.

11) The heart of lower mentality people burn before the fire of other's fame, and they feel insulted that they were unable to reach such a high position.

12) Excessive attachment to the pleasure of senses leads to bondage, and detachment from the pleasure of senses leads to the salvation; therefore it is the mind alone that is responsible for salvation or bondage.

13) The person who attain soul consciousness by means of knowledge of that the Supreme Self (Paramatma), will always be absorbed in meditative trance, wherever his mind leads him.
